| Bands and Callers 2009 |
| Contrazz combines the innovative and improvisational style and solos of a jazz band with a repertoire of traditional contra music. Contrazz is a high-energy ensemble known for its driving rhythms and hot music. From North Carolina, this eclectic five-member ensemble of highly skilled players includes nationally recognized accordionist David DiGiuseppe, known for his fiery style and unique approach to the instrument, along with jazz saxophonist and flutist Rodney Marsh. Add to this one of North Carolina's critically acclaimed jazz-fusion guitarists Bernie Petteway and keyboardist Diane Petteway, as well as percussionist Sara Romweber, and you have a band with a serious groove. This will be Contrazz's west coast debut. |
| Notorious is a fluid combination of musical masters. From the east (New England, etc.), they are full of rhythmic drive and melodic candor. They played at Dancing Fool in 2007. Guitarist and waltz king Larry Unger is widely known for his gutsy guitar and banjo playing. Eden MacAdam-Somer is is one of the most exciting and versatile young violinists performing today, having been a featured soloist with symphony and chamber orchestras, jazz and swing bands. Bill Tomczak plays improvisational clarinet and saxophone creating a wonderful contra-jazz sensation. Sam Bartlett brings his masterful mandolin playing to the mix. Ralph Gordon provides that essential contra groove with his mastery of the bass. Mark Hellenberg will once again be providing his incomparable percussion to this big band. Notorious played at Dancing Fool 2007 with this six-member band format. |
